Hi everyone.
I wanted to do a little post on Mental Retardation and explain what mental retardation is and it's causes.
Mental retardation is diagnosed in adults, meaning a person who experiences difficulty learning and has basic motor skill problems. Mental retardation extends to anyone with an IQ of 70 or below. Many people have trouble with memory, speaking, and handling social activites.
Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, which was revised in 1955, is the scale inwhich we measure mental retardation. Here it is:
(Taken from Wikipedia)
Profound mental retardation: Below 20
Severe mental retardation: 20-34
Moderate mental retardation: 35-49
Mild mental retardation: 50-69
Borderline mental retardation: 70-79
Three most common inborn causes of mental retardation are: Down syndrome (a genetic abnormality; an extra 21st chromosome is present when conception), alcohol consumption during pregnancy, and Fragile X syndrom (a condition where the X chromosome is damaged, due to folic acid deficiency). Those are just a few but most common causes, there are hundreds of other causes.
So that's a small bit of information about mental retardation!
Take care.

Be careful here... a diagnosis of MR is not only based on IQ. An individual with an IQ of approximately 70 or below also has to have concurrent deficits or impairments in present adaptive functioning in at least two of the following areas: communication, self-care, home living, social skills, use of community resources, self-direction, functional academic skills, work leisure, heath, and safety! rw
i think that it would be interesting if u added how MR effects people that are diagnosed with it and the people around themsvqkxt
