1. Discuss why it is difficult to measure prejudice today by directly asking individuals if they are prejudiced, and distinguish between explicit and implicit prejudice. Then, explain how the Implicit Association Test (IAT) measures implicit attitudes. Finally, list the methods which social psychologists have identified to reduce prejudice.
2.Describe the Stanford prison study in terms of the experimental procedure and what Zimbardo and his colleagues observed in their participants. Then, explain the behavior of the participants in this study in terms of deindividuation processes and social roles.
3. The obedience study conducted by Stanley Milgram has become world famous. More than a thousand people at several American universities went through replications of the study. In addition, researchers in other countries, such as Spain and the Netherlands, have used Milgram's procedures. Explain, in detail, the procedures that Milgram used in his study and then analyze his results and those results found by other researchers. What conclusions did Milgram reach? How have critics reacted to his research?
4. Compare and contrast the different types of therapists: Psychotherapist, clinical psychologist, psychoanalyst, psychiatrist, licensed clinical social worker.
5. Compare and contrast advantages and disadvantages of the 5 major research methods used in psychology (case study, observational study, surveys, correlational studies and experiments).
6. Think of a topic in psychology (from Chapter 1, your own experience, or a recent media report) that interests you. Write a hypothesis regarding this topic, based on a particular psychological perspective (i.e., biological, cognitive, sociocultural, psychodynamic). Explain what research method you would use in order to investigate the topic.
7. Explain Factor Analysis and the history of the "Big Five". What are the Big Five personality traits and what would Freud say about the validity of the Big Five?
8. A casual observer of the processes of human development might reach the following conclusion: "All the important milestones are reached by 20 years of age or so." Offer some evidence to support this conclusion, then offer some evidence to refute this conclusion.
9. What contribute did Margaret and Harry Harlow and Mary Ainsworth make to developmental psychology? Describe the procedures and outcomes of both of their famous experiments.
10. What is the Fundamental Attribution Error (FAE)? Which blog containing a post on the FAE did you comment on (for the required blog post assignment) and what was your comment? Would you write anything different today?
11. Draw and describe the toy you designed in class three weeks ago. What age was your toy created for? How did your toy support the cognitive developmental stages according to Piaget?
12. What is Mental Retardation? How can the exact same traumatic brain injury in two people leave one diagnosed as mentally retarded and not the other?
13. Which psychological movement did the linguist, Noam Chomsky, help to uproot? How did he do this?
