This week your blog posts should only be about Social Psychology

One idea is to research the terms in your textbook social psychology chapter. Here's another fantastic website: http://www.socialpsychology.org/

And more specifically, topics in social psychology: http://www.socialpsychology.org/social.htm

Effects of a Sexy Appearance of a Woman at Work

Does the way a woman dresses while working play a role in their social ability? How do people view women who dress professionally and the other who looks more sexy? Is the professional looking woman viewed as more intellegent? How does this relate to women in low and high status jobs?
While researching the academic website of EBSCO from the Pratt Libraries, I gathered information dealing with social psychology. The article that I chose was "Effects of a Sexy Appearance on Perceived Competence of Women." This article focused on a study that was recorded in 2005 by "P. Glick, S. Larsen, C. Johnson, and H. Branstiter, their research showed that a sexy appearance may be [damaging] to women in high-status jobs"(116). The results of the study showed that women who were sexually dressed in high status jobs recieved lower ratings in competence. To gather these results, participants rated professionall and sexually dressed women in both low- and high- status jobs.
Researchers found that "professionally dressed women are viewed as more intelligent and capable than are sexually dressed women for high-status jobs, but not for low status jobs "(117). One of the interesting results of this experiment was when participants rated the photo of the professional and more sexually dressed woman, they rated the sexually dressed woman as having a high social competence. The data showed that "sexiness is associated with social ability in low-status jobs, but when a woman is in a position of power, sexiness may be viewed as dis -functional and inappropriate "(118). In my opinion this whole expirement is based on a stereotype. The stereotype that women who dress sexually are not professional and may not be as smart as a professionally dressed woman. Just because a woman enjoys dressing a certain way does not mark her as being uneducated or social.
