Methods of treatment for Autistic Children

In this Science Daily news article, we are given told there are two different camps of theories when treating and teaching communication and other basic skills to preschool children with autism. However, a Michigan State University psychologist Brooke Ingersoll argues that the actual methods of these two theories, behavioral and developmental approach are not so different. Behaviorists advocate learning through reinforcements & rewards, and developmentalists argue for learning through interactions with the caregivers. Ingersoll proposes that the two sides should not be in such disagreements, but rather try to incorporate both methods to make a combined treatment option.
