Defense Mechanisms

I found this website on an extension of the defense mechanisms, more than the six we went over in class.

If there are 13 defensive mechanisms, do you think that it is possible that we have all of these different mechanisms coursing through our minds, and we rationalize or irrationalize how to react? Or can we classify people as different types by how they react or defend themselves in certain situations?

i think alot of people have the potential to react to a given situation with any of the defense mechanisms. I do not, however, believe that these mechanisms are just hanging out in one's brain waiting to be utilized. Environment, in my mind, has a large affect on the behaviors that people eventually manifest. In a behavioral view, one may have learned the action of projection and later used it in his life when he yells at his wife after a hard day's work. This doesn't necessarily mean that this man was born predisposed to this method of coping.

Defense mechanisms are an easy way for coping through different situations. Many of these behaviors are relative to their surroundings and the environment in which one grows up in. If a child grows up in a house hold where their parents or relatives use anger or violence as a defense mechanism the child will soon think that becoming violent is a healthy way to deal with various situations, but it is interesting to see all the various ways of coping and defense mechanisms written out.

I agree with both the comments above, i also agree that all the defense mechanisms are in each individual to an extent. In my opinion part of growing up and and realizing truth has a lot to do with exploring the self. Part of growing up is understanding one's defense system and utilizing it to either face the issue, or blow it off for another time. I feel in a lot of people, that they begin to toss out, as they grow up, certain defense mechanisms because they are not acceptant of them, or because they grow out of it. But with everyone, there is still at least a few that they can't go without.
