Hey guys, check out this video from youtube
it is about Piaget experiment

According to Piaget the kid is in preoperational stage. In this stage they lack the cognitive abilities for understanding abstract principles such as math
However, it has lower ecological validity. Kids perform much better in more 'natural' settings-in more life-like situations. Try to do the same'water' experiment like this: Take two identical glasses and crack or chip one of them lightly. Poor the same amount of water in and ask your child if there is the same amount of water. When the child agrees, tell to your child 'Oh No, this one is cracked lets poor the water in the new glass' (of course wider or taller)then, ask your child again.
I think you will still get the same result. The child will still think that the bigger glass has more liquid in it. The crack will probably just confuse things.
ReplyDeletehaving a child in the preoperational stage be able to determine that each glass has the same amount of water in it is close to impossible. of course by reinforcing that the glasses contain equal amounts by pouring and re-pouring water the child will eventually give you the correct response, but i am not sure if they will actually understand the concept being taught. if the same child that had this idea reinforced was asked the same question the next day i doubt that the child would actually know the answer.
