Not only does the article "Cleaning obsession leads to depression" relate to our unit on psychological disorders, it could also be related to Eugenics. If we are to produce babies that are "perfect" in ever aspect of immunity and health, it may lead to some unanticipated effects. If this study is proven to be true, then babies produce through Eugenics, their lack of contact with infectious agents may cause them to battle depression. Their bodies may become overly sterile and impair the brains ability to produce serotonin. Eliminating viruses and bacteria may not create the positive effect that is being hoped for.
Although there are many remedies, there is no permanent cure for depression. If this theory is proved to be true, scientist may need to further test the idea of Eugenics. These harmful effects may cause an increased rate in suicides. This article goes to show that there are many different forms of depression making it so difficult to pinpoint how to cure it. Everyone reacts differently to the medication and what works for someone, may not work for someone else. Although I am skeptical as to whether or not this study is correct, if depression is triggered by the immune system, then an anti-inflammatory drug may be able to work as a more successful remedy. I think this article is interesting however, it shows the harmful effects of many things that are supposed to be beneficial to us.
