Vern Riffe School to Dedicate New Playground

Although I was not in a group who presented playgrounds that integrated typically developed children with children with special needs, I was very interested in the results. I think that it is important for a child's development to be surrounded by all different types of people. Therefore, these parks do not only allow the disabled children to indulge in a sense of normalcy, but it also assists the typically developed children to be exposed to reality. In life you are not only going to be with people such as yourself thus it is important that children are subjected to diversity at a young age.
In this article, Vern Riffe school developed a new playground to better meet the needs of their students. The Prinicipal Mark Cornwell explains that the school serves a large number of children who have sensory difficulties. This new playground that is being built contains equipment that is sensory oriented to assist these special needs students in their therapy. The school will officially open the playground for use on May 3rd giving these special needs students a place where they can interact with the typically developed children.
After today's presentations, it is nice to see that it was not only a classroom lesson. It is inspiring to see that these children are not being discriminated against and are being provided with something that could be potentially helpful. Not only will the sensory equipment make them feel like a normally developed child, they will also be able to interact with children without disabilities. I feel this integration will be beneficial for both parties involved and may act as a catalyst for other school systems. I hope that one day every school will have such a place for children to interact and learn from each other.
