A lot of the time you get a sense of accomplishment when you complete something or let's say, buy something. You find a thing (or more than one) that you like, and you're in one of those moods where you don't care how much money it is, you get it anyway. I guess it's a different way of "loving" or feeling good about yourself. Especially if you're in a bad/sad mood, you want to do something to lift your spirits. Another way people cope with depression is by eating or even smoking. Some people go running or take up something to relieve the stress. But shopping is definitely something people like to do to feel that they've made things better. Although they will have to go back to facing rotten reality, at least they'll be in a better mood and ready to take on what it is they need to. It's like a soldier going into war. When they finish their training, they're thrown a big feast to lift their spirits before they go into battle. It's all about making yourself feel good.
Two words; impulse gatification, society is based on following these two words. Its pretty sad, but I also do it as long as I could justify the purchased products necessity in my life at that moment. Researchers concluded sadness can trigger a chain of emotions leading to extravagant tendencies. Sadness leads people to become more focused on themselves, causing the person to feel that they and their possessions are worth little. That feeling increases willingness to pay more — presumably to feel better about themselves.
