Are religion and superstition so different? Why do people champion the validity of religion, while repudiating all superstitious beliefs. Superstition is an excessively credulous belief in the supernatural. 2 a widely held but irrational belief in supernatural influences, especially as bringing good or bad luck.
Believers in religion feel that their moral uprightness will be rewarded in the next life. If they abstain from the iniquity that is rampant in the world, then they will be able to live in eternal peace. However, if they do not adhere to the rigid guidelines of their respective god, then they will forever be tormented. Constantly they live with this fear of a tortured afterlife, so they do all that they can to remain in their god's favor.
What is the difference between this behavior and a person who dares not break a mirror or walk under a ladder for fear of bad luck. Bad luck being the equivalent of eternal damnation.
