Environmental change affect your well being.

A new psychological condition has been discovered in Northern Australia called solastalgia. This term has been invented to define the condition of how ecological change affects your well being. Any major changes about you can affect your psyche. This accounts to the specific change of the environment that you were accustomed to, without your control the landscape is drastically changing, thus creating an intense discomfort and anxiety.

Solastalgia is “a combination of the Latin word solacium (comfort) and the Greek root –algia (pain), which is defined as “the pain experienced when there is recognition that the place where one resides and that one loves is under immediate assault . . . a form of homesickness one gets when one is still at ‘home.’ ” Solastalgia is not an environmental effect on the psyche, it is the fear of change. The article refers to a small area in Australia that was under threat of loosing its beauty to coal mining. The people of the town that was under threat feared the negative changes to the home they loved. There are however, countless proven psychological conditions caused by the environment. Still, Solastalgia is interesting form the standpoint of how the media’s portrayal of environmental threats is affecting society’s mental well being. Is it possible that the extreme saturation of environmental concern is actually negatively affecting us and we don’t even know it?
