Why Career Planning is Time Wasted

This article talks about how everything in our culture is about planning. We plan everything in advance from our days to our entire lives. People like to plan because it makes them feel in control over everything. Realistically, nobody really knows what they want to do or where they want to be in the future. It's all about experience and age. The whole concept of planning everything may make people feel organized and confident, but it also puts on a ton of pressure. The article mentions how 18 year olds are constantly being asked what they want to do with their life. Though there may be a lot of people that think they know what they want to do, they usually change their minds along the way. For instance, when I was 18 I was set on being a graphic designer. I enjoyed playing around with imagery and advertising, but after 2 years of being a graphic design major at a different school, I started to hate it. I realized it was more of just a hobby and I could never see myself being happy doing this the rest of my life as my career. I ended up transferring schools and changing my major completely. There are plenty of people out there that do what they are "supposed" to do, such as go to college, get a job and start a family. A lot of people do what they have planned, but still aren't happy. As mentioned in the article, people want to make their own decisions along the way to find their own happiness. My best friend's sister went to college for four years like most of her friends. She graduated four years ago, and unlike the majority of her friends, she never got a real job. She still to this day isn't sure what she wants to do for the rest of her life, but she is the happiest person I know. She, as of right now, is doing exactly what she wants, though most people would disapprove. She finds random small jobs that she enjoys, such as working at yoga studios, and once she has enough money saved up, she travels for months to many different countries making her own way. She does very little planning for her future but its still happy and on her own two feet. One day when she is ready to settle down, she will find a permanent job she is happy with.

I agree that people these days plan out too much, though I don't think career planning is a complete waste of time, just maybe to the degree that we do it is a little ridiculous.

This article cites a study done about not being able to predict what we want. They use people picking out an entire weeks worth of lunch sandwiches in advance, vs people picking every day at lunch which sandwich they wanted. They study found that people were happier when they were able to pick the day of. I think that sandwiches are quite different from careers. I agree that at 18, few people know exactly what they want, and many people do end up switching what they had originally planned on doing. I know that I came into Pratt with a different major than I now have.

I think they biggest thing for people to learn, and the article touches on this, is that it isn't the end of the world to make a wrong decision. I think it becomes such a big deal these days because college is so expensive and it is a lot of wasted money if someone changes their mind after 2 years.
