Diagnosis: Depression


Depression is a common but serious illness. Everyone has at one point felt sad but these moments of sadness are brief. There are several forms of depression. People suffering from major depression find that the disorder often interferes with their daily life, messing with their ability to work, sleep, eat, and enjoy in general. People suffering dysthymia is noted by long-term symptoms. They may not be severe but can prevent typical functioning. In people suffering from minor depression, symptopms last for two weeks or longer but do not meet the full criteria for major depression.

The main signs of depression include persistent sad, anxious or empty feelings; feelings of hopelessness or pessimism, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness, irritability, restlessness; loss of interest in activities or habbies; fatigue and decreased energy; difficulty concentrating/ remembering details; difficulty making decisions; insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping; overating or appetite loss; thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts; aches or pains, headaches, cramps or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment.

The best way to treat depression is to vitis a doctor of mental health specialist. Medications such as antidepressants can be prescribed and work on brain chemicals in order to regulate moods. Psychotherapy can also work or in often extreme cases electroconvulsive therapy can be an option.
