Yoga and Therapy

This entry is going to touch on the idea of how Yoga and mediation work as a therapy and they should become an crucial part of all practices today.

The definition for yoga (taken from Webster) is:
1. A Hindu theistic philosophy teaching that supression of all activity of body, mind, and will in order that the self may realize it's distinction from them and attain liberation.
2. A system of exercisies for attaining bodily or mental control and well-being.

Many accredited psychologists and psychoanalysts have said that yoga and therapy are completely interwined. The body and mine are completely relative. When the body is exhausted the mind is as well, when we are good to our bodies and live a healthy lifestyle it affects our mental health as well. Many people use exercising as a tool to release energy, even negative energy.

Yoga is used as an alternative to modern medicine. It uses the body to clear the mind, and has become beneficial in certain illnesses such as cancer, blood pressure ailments, it improves circulation of blood, and corrects bad posture. All of these things can soothe the mind as well.

The practice of yoga is ancient, and there are many different branches of this practice. There are many different reasons why Yoga is practiced, whether it be for religious purposes, improving fitness, or mental health. Since the body and mind and directly linked to one another yoga is a perfect practice to clear the mind and relieve tension, anxiety, and depression.

you know this reminds of the running. even though its not the exact same thing there is some relavence. theres this thing called the "runners high" and man do you feel good. usually people thing of running as a waste of time or too much effort but onc a persn comes to realize pain and to exist with it near the middle of running you get a euphoric state of mind of being invincible. Famous long distance runner Steve Prefontaine said "its not who can run the fastest, but who can take the most punishment".

I wonder if different types of yoga can help different psychological areas? Would the physical differences between bikram yoga and vinyasa yoga effect different aspects of the psyche or is it just the overall practice of mental and physical control that is benneficial?
